Let me share a secret with you - you can spend a few days visiting St. Augustine Florida without spending a fortune. Here’s just a sampling of what you can do.

Food and lodging will have to come out of the budget first but once you have that taken care of you won’t have to spend much else. There are many fun and interesting things to do or you can just relax, now that’s a novel idea.

*Mission Nombre de Dios (free) - This beautiful area is the location where Pedro Menendez landed in 1565 and claimed the land for Spain. His Chaplin conducted the first Catholic Mass ever held in the US shortly after landing. Just look for the 200′ stainless steel cross towering above the city that marks this historic site. Be sure to visit this lovely area.

*St. George Street (free) - This is one of several wonderful little streets throughout the downtown historic area. Old houses line each side of the street. Many have unique shops in the lower level with apartments above. You’ll enjoy wandering down this lovely street.

*Saint Photios Greek Orthodox National Shrine (free) - This little shrine is absolutely stunning and not to be missed. You’ll be amazed when you see the Byzantine style frescoes. The Shrine is dedicated to the first colony of Greek people who arrived in America in 1768.

*San Sebastian Winery (free) - Generally, most folks don’t think of Florida when it comes to fine wines. This family owned winery is going to change your mind. They grow several hundred acres of the muscadine grape which is used to produce their award winning wines. Stop in for a tour and wine tasting. A very interesting stop.

*Trolleys and Trains-Now you will have to pay to be chauffeured around St. Augustine on the trains or trolleys but I feel it is a bargain. The tickets are good for three days and either company will come and pick you up wherever you are staying and take you back at the end of the day. What could be better, it’s a great way to see the city.

You are certainly going to be busy and all while staying within your budget. St. Augustine Florida is the perfect place to relax and enjoy several fun filled and interesting days. Make your plans, this is a wonderful time to visit the Nation’s Oldest City.
